West Regional Opens with Buzzer Beater, NBA Legend and NBA Teams

ORANGE COUNTY, CA – MAY 11: The Jr. NBA World Championship West Regional tournament tipped off with pool play Friday. Girls and boys teams from Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah gathered to battle for a chance to represent the West at the Jr. NBA World Championship at  ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Florida.

Pool play was highlighted by a game-winning buzzer beater by the Chula Vista Hawks’ Erick Amador. With 6.9 seconds left on the clock and the Hawks behind by 1, Amador forced a steal and heaved a mid-range jumper from the right wing to put the game on ice, with a final score of 48-47. Amador finished the game with 30 points.

The excitement from the opening tournament was palpable throughout the day as teams affiliated with the LA Spark’s Candace Parker, the Phoenix Mercury’s Diana Taurasi, and the Chicago Bull’s Cristiano Felicio participated in the day’s play.

NBA legend Michael Cooper coached and led his team, Two One Elite 14U, to an opening win with a score of 55-21.

Representatives from the Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers, Golden State Warriors, LA Sparks were on hand, as well as representatives from the Laker Girls.

Gatorade provided product and Protein bars for players throughout the day, as they will through the entire Jr. NBA World Championship.
